Osteoporosis and osteopenia are chronic conditions that significantly increase the risk of fractures both in the United States and globally. Effective management requires healthcare professionals to understand bone metabolism and the physiological changes that contribute to bone loss. Recognizing these conditions as chronic diseases is essential for identifying risk factors early and initiating timely interventions to prevent fractures and related disabilities. This program is designed to provide participants with current and emerging treatment options to improve patient outcomes in bone health.
The primary target audience includes Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists.
The secondary target audience is Endocrinologists and Other Clinicians who treat endocrine conditions.

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate imaging modalities based on their strengths and limitations, apply appropriate clinical indications for each, and identify vertebral fractures to improve patient outcomes.

  • Utilize practical tools to identify individual risk factors for osteoporosis and assess the likelihood of fractures.

  • Describe the properties, indications, and appropriate use of available medications for osteoporosis treatment, including initiating therapy based on patient characteristics and adjusting treatment over time.

  • Implement lifestyle modifications to optimize bone health, including nutrition and supplementation, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises, and fall-prevention strategies.
