Pdf Summary
The flu spreads through droplets released when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby or can be inhaled into the lungs. The flu can also be spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth or nose.

Signs of the flu include fever, headache, cough, chills, sore throat, fatigue, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. Not everyone will experience all of these symptoms, and most people get better without seeing a doctor or taking medicine.

To protect oneself from getting sick, it is recommended to stay away from sick people, wash hands often with soap and water (or use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available), cover the nose and mouth with a tissue or arm when coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth.

If someone in the household has the flu, those who are not sick can still go to work as long as they take precautions such as frequent handwashing. It is important to seek emergency medical care for children and adults who show warning signs such as trouble breathing, bluish or gray skin color, serious vomiting, and confusion.

Antiviral drugs can be prescribed to treat the flu and may make symptoms milder and help in recovery. However, most people get better without needing these medications.

For more information, contact CDC at 1-800-CDC-INFO or visit www.cdc.gov/flu.
